Filing tax returns isn’t so taxing after all!

A volunteer helping a senior citizen to
e-file his tax return.

So the tax filing season is here again. Before you crease your brow in frustration and reach for the calculator, let us share with you a hassle-free way to fulfil your tax obligations. Read on to learn about e-filing.

At the start of the tax filing period, the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) will obtain the employment details of all employees in the Public Service from the Accountant-General’s Department.

Your salary information and relief claims based on last year’s assessment records will be pre-filled in the e-form, known as the Income, Deductions and Reliefs Statement (IDRS).

So all you need to do is log in and check that the pre-filled income, deductions and reliefs are correct. More importantly, remember to fill in any other sources of income, deductions and relief claims.

SINGPASS OR IRAS PIN?
To e-file, you can use either your SingPass or an IRAS PIN to log onto myTax Portal (https://mytax.iras.gov.sg).

If you e-filed your tax return using your SingPass last year, you will receive a letter encouraging you to do the same this year.

If you have been using your IRAS PIN over the past years, you can continue to use the same IRAS PIN to e-file. If not, you can use the system-generated IRAS PIN sent to you in a sealed mailer. Don’t forget your IRAS PIN as it is a permanent PIN that allows you to log onto myTax Portal to perform all your online transactions, including e-filing.

For those who have not tried e-filing before, get your SingPass now and try it!

GET HELP WITH E-FILING
If you are still unsure about how to e-file, don’t worry because help is available:
Visit any Volunteer e-Filing Service Centre from 17 March to 15 April 2007: Check www.iras.gov.sg or call 1800-252 5011 to locate a suitable centre. On Saturdays and Sundays from 2 pm to 6 pm, volunteers will be there to guide you.
Check out the e-Filing Service Centres at Bedok Community Centre, Yew Tee Community Club and Chong Pang Community Club from 5 March to 18 April 2007: IRAS officers will be there on Mondays to Fridays (10 am to 5 pm) and Saturdays (9 am to 1 pm) to help you.

NO NEED TO FILE A TAX RETURN
If you earned less than $22,000 last year, IRAS will not send you a form or PIN mailer as you will not need to pay any tax. But if you do receive a tax form or PIN mailer, do e-file or fill up the tax form and send it back to IRAS.

BEAT THE RUSH!
With your income, deductions and tax relief items now pre-filled, e-filing is definitely the simplest way to file your taxes. You have up to 18 April. But why wait? E-file now to avoid the last-minute rush!
