| The Phantom of the Opera |
| |
The Phantom of the Opera — the original novel
by Gaston Leroux was what inspired Andrew Lloyd Webber’s
long-running musical.
The story needs little introduction. The
opera ghost is a shadowy figure living in the
bowels of the Paris Opera House. Dismissed
by the new managers of the opera house as
a myth and joke, he starts a reign of terror
over the opera house occupants.
Meanwhile, he becomes obsessed with the
beautiful young singer Christine, coming
to her as the mysterious Angel of Music.
What tragic consequences await Christine
and the rest of the opera house when she
spurns him for another man?
The storyline is nothing original, incorporating
elements of a murder-mystery and
romance. However, the book is still worth a
read for fans of the musical, if only for the
book’s darker and more sinister portrayal of
the opera ghost.
His character is more fleshed out in the
book, which also offers glimpses into
his past, making him a more intriguing
protagonist than the musical’s two-dimensional
phantom. |
