Where I Belong
“How you get your identity when everyone tells you who to be? You say you’re yourself and ignore it all, but then you ask, ‘What defines me?’”

These were a few lines from a youth-for-youth production entitled “Where I Belong”. Pretty profound considering it was written by a
15-year-old girl who brainstormed with her peers from 10 different schools to script the 90-minute play.

I attended the opening performance of this innovatively crafted, original play produced by 80 young Singaporeans with the help of seasoned theatre practitioners and was moved by a number of scenes which conveyed an exceptional level of raw honesty and maturity. The young performers received encouraging response from their lively audience ranging from laughter to spontaneous catcalls at a cheeky scene exploring the world of mail-order brides.

The play ended on a high note with the warm, fuzzy message that your identity is where your home is; wherever, whatever and whoever home is
for you.

“Where I Belong”, staged from 19 to 22 July at Jubilee Hall, was produced by ACT3 and supported by MICA and NHB.

“Looking back on the past seven weeks of my internship, I must say I enjoyed every bit of it. I wake up every day looking forward to work and I believe I will miss coming to work when the internship ends.

Through daily observation of my colleagues and immersing myself in the culture of the workplace, I have learnt some lessons about working life and what I look for in a career.
The experience also helped to dispel some preconceived ideas about the Civil Service.

I think Civil Service employees are pretty ‘happening’. From kickboxing classes to wine appreciation sessions, employees take the initiative to make the workplace a more fun environment to be in.”
