The Institute of Mental Health’s (IMH) Early
Psychosis Intervention Programme (EPIP) for
detecting and managing psychosis early has
been awarded the prestigious State of Kuwait
Prize by the World Health Organization for
making an outstanding contribution to research
in health promotion.
To win the award, an organisation must have,
among other things, successfully implemented
a programme that has improved the quality
of healthcare services for the population
and reduced a given health problem.
The EPIP seeks to educate the public about
the signs and symptoms of psychosis and to
encourage sufferers to get treatment early.
There has been much evidence that early treatment
reduces morbidity and improves the quality
of life for patients and their families.
Results show that two years after IMH launched
the programme, patients with psychosis are
diagnosed eight months earlier than before.
The employment rate among patients has also
improved from 24.8% to 48%.
Said IMH CEO Leong Yew Meng: “This is a significant
achievement for Singapore’s healthcare sector
and IMH is honored to be bestowed with
this award.” |
