Although blogs have become
an increasingly popular form of communication, the use
of blogs by organisations to communicate with their customers
and stakeholders is still relatively new.
The National Library Board’s (NLB) innovative use
of blogs to communicate and bridge the gap with its customers
attests to its bold and creative culture.
NLB launched two blogs — High Browse Online and
Programes@100 Victoria Street last year.
HighBrowse Online (http://dl.nlb.gov.sg/highbrowseonline/)
is the Internet version of the HighBrowse publication
that is regularly distributed at the libraries. It provides
reviews and synopses of the latest publications.
Programmes@100 Victoria Street (http://dl.nlb.gov.sg/victoria/)
offers a thorough listing of programmes and events taking
place at the National Library, and complements existing
publicity and content-delivery channels such as NLB’s
website (www.nlb.gov.sg),
posters, brochures and email direct mailers.
A complement to the printed materials distributed at the
libraries, these blogs offer many more advantages. For
one, they are more immediate than print, so information
about new arrivals at the library can be disseminated
more quickly.
The blogs also provide an easily accessible platform to
host and retain content which would otherwise be ephemeral.
This is a definite advantage over other information channels
as over time, posters and brochures would be retired,
emails would be trashed, and it may be difficult to find
information in back issues of magazines.
Written in a light-hearted tone, the blogs are popular
with the book community, attracting some 10,000 hits to
date. NLB has been receiving emails and calls from patrons
interested to sign up for library programmes after reading
about them online.
Given the success of this venture, NLB looks forward to
launching more exciting outreach initiatives in the future.
