The Singapore Family Tree (SFT) portal by the
National Heritage Board (NHB) is a significant
new project that connects past, present and
future generations of Singaporeans together.
In an increasingly globalised world, people
are venturing out of Singapore to conduct
business, make investments and live abroad for
some time. The SFT portal aims to foster a sense
of rootedness in Singaporeans.
Since the portal was launched in May 2005,
some 3,500 families (with a total of more than
33,000 names) have started building their family
trees.
About 50% who signed up are aged between
20 and 30, which is an encouraging sign that
youths are interested in researching their roots
and treasure their family ties.
To promote the portal, NHB organised
events such as the Largest Singapore Family
Tree Contest, and recently hosted the Tan Tock
Seng family members at the Asian Civilisations
Museum, where they unveiled their family tree
of more than 1,000 names.
The full features of the portal were rolled out
in September 2005. Each family may now build
a family tree, invite family members to join the
tree, merge related trees, record family history,
upload photos, oral recordings and video clips, as
well as have their very own family webpage.
These features are available for free for one
year. At the end of the trial period, the subscriber
can choose to terminate the service or continue
at a special price of $30 a year. |
