Healthy lifestyle tips for a healthier you!

With a healthy lifestyle, one’s risk of having lifestyle-related diseases is reduced. A healthy lifestyle brings about improvements in all aspects of a person’s well-being. Here are some tips for a healthier you.

Exercise regularly
Everyone knows how beneficial regular exercise is. Regular exercise keeps body weight in check, builds strength and stamina and improves self-esteem. It is also a great stress-buster! Moreover, it is very important for preventing heart disease, stroke and osteoporosis.

Here are some tips to make exercise more fun:
Exercise with friends or join an exercise group
Have active weekends with your family. For example, go for a
nature walk
Choose sports which you enjoy

Eat healthily
Eating is a national pastime of Singaporeans. It is therefore extremely important that you watch what you eat! A healthy diet reduces the risk of chronic diseases like coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity and certain forms of cancers.

Here are some healthy eating tips:
Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables
Select food with less fat
Prepare food with less salt and sauces
Include whole grains and other high-fibre foods such as oats
and bran
Use healthier cooking methods like steaming, grilling or baking
Choose foods and beverages with less sugar
Reduce the intake of processed and preserved foods
If you are a drinker, keep your alcohol intake to a minimum

Don’t smoke
It cannot be said often enough — smoking kills. It leads to many different deadly diseases. Smoking increases the risk of many cancers, heart disease and stroke. It can cause chronic lung problems like emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It is related to infertility and impotence.

Passive smokers are at risk of smoking-related diseases too. If you don’t smoke, resolve never to take it up.

If you are a smoker, make a decision to quit right now. Here are some tips to help you kick the habit:
Avoid smokers, bars and pubs
Exercise regularly
Learn relaxation techniques to reduce stress
Munch on healthy snacks if you miss the cigarette in your mouth
See your doctor for counselling and medications to help you quit

Manage your stress
Most of us experience stress in one way or another in our daily lives. But if the stress is prolonged and continuous, it can lead to health problems such as high blood pressure, indigestion, increased coughs and colds and depression.

Hence it is important to manage stress properly. Easier said than done? Follow these stress-busting tips to avoid stress-related problems:
Plan your time well but remember to leave room to be flexible and spontaneous
Be realistic about what you can do; set achievable goals
Make friends and family an important priority — they will support you in times of need
Share your problems with someone close; do not keep them
to yourself
Make sure you set aside some personal time for yourself regularly
Learn relaxation techniques like meditation and yoga

A healthy lifestyle makes you feel better — mentally, physically and emotionally. Make a resolution — exercise more, eat healthier food, stop smoking and beat stress today!
