Captain (Cpt) Clarance Tan Kiang from the Naval
Diving Unit is called the “People’s
Leader” by his subordinates.
The reason for this, explains one of his subordinates,
Master Sergeant (MSG) Phua, is that Cpt Tan puts
his men’s welfare and needs before his.
One instance of this was when an operation carried
out by his unit was extended beyond Chinese New
Year. Unable to celebrate this special occasion
with their families, his unit suffered from low
morale. Cpt Tan specially arranged for his troopers
to make overseas calls to their families.
MSG Phua said that Cpt Tan also constantly motivates
his people to be more proactive in their roles and
to take on new challenges.
For Cpt Tan, it all boils down to regarding his
subordinates as his most important customers. “After
all they are the ones who will be helping me to
carry out my work,” he said. |
