When we refer to Economy Drive (ED) in MTI now,
everyone understands it to be “Spend What
You Need, Save Where You Can”. This was not
the case when ED was first introduced in 2003.
In order to dispel the misconceptions about ED,
MTI launched a campaign to raise staffs’ awareness
of ED. The message was simple: Everyone can make
a difference and simple individual efforts to stretch
every dollar spent will, cumulatively, help to save
significant amounts of money for MTI.
Collaterals such as flyers and posters helped to
cascade the message to all levels of staff. IT platforms
such as the intranet and e-newsletter were used
to share ED best practices among our agencies. MTI
also launched themed suggestions and WITs to spark
ideas and projects.
The results were truly heartening. Over the last
two financial years, MTI and its agencies saved
a total of close to $200 million.
Below are two initiatives that have yielded cost
savings for MTI.
When news broke out about the termination of a free
online newspaper subscription, Lily Phua from the
Business Knowledge Group in the Economic Development
Board (EDB) quickly called the publisher to ask
for better rates for both print and online subscriptions.
She also touched base with all of EDB’s overseas
officers and local divisions to gather their access
requirements. Armed with 106 user IDs, Ms Phua was
then in a good position to negotiate further when
the publisher contacted her to offer a corporate
discount. Her efforts save EDB slightly more than
$10,000 a year.
The newly developed Web-Geographical Information
System on JTC Corporation’s intranet enables
users to generate allocation, site and coloured
floor plans for both land-based and multi-storey
buildings.
This way, JTC does not need to engage external consultants
to gather the information. Officers can easily print
out the plans themselves.
The system also improves staffs’ response
time to customers and has resulted in substantial
savings amounting to $213,000 per year. |
