|
retinal detachment:
the retina gets separated from the eyeball
and this can lead to blindness |
| |
macular degeneration:
the retina degenerates and affects the central
area of your vision |
| |
glaucoma: the pressure
inside the eyeball increases and if untreated,
this can lead to blindness |
| |
cataracts: the lens in
the eye becomes opaque (light is prevented
from passing through) and this can occur at
an earlier age |
| |
Take vision
breaks: Many of us spend long hours in front
of the computer every day. Some of us also
do other forms of near work for long hours.
After 30 to 40 minutes of near work, take
a vision break by looking at some distant
objects or looking out of the window for 3
to 5 minutes. |

Practise good eye-care
habits:
| - |
When reading, sit upright
in a comfortable chair at a table, hold
the book about 30 centimetres away and
ensure that the room is well lit. |
| - |
When using the computer,
the monitor screen should be about 50
centimetres away from the eyes and situated
in a well-lit room. |
- |
When watching TV, sit at least 2 metres
away, and make sure the height of the
TV screen is at or below eye level and
the room light is turned on. |
|
| |
Go for regular eye checks:
See an optometrist at least once a year to
get your eyes checked if you are already myopic.
Make sure your children don’t miss the
eye checks conducted by School Health Services. |
| |
Adopt healthy lifestyle
habits: Eat a balanced diet, get at least
8 hours of sleep and exercise regularly. |
