The hottest club memberships in town!

A teacher-led LC: Members of the Memo Processing LC coming together to hear from Deputy Director Gerald Goh. The sharing session has now become a part of the induction course for new officers.

Some Economic Development Board (EDB) officers have been watching German movies together, discussing new applications and issues over brownbag lunches, or just hanging out and drinking tea together during working hours. Lest you think the officers are skiving, read on to find out more about EDB’s latest knowledge sharing initiative.

The EDB Learning Clubs (LC) were set up in 2003. What is unique about this initiative is that officers can decide what they want to learn, who they want to learn from and how they want to learn. Once common learning interests are identified, a Learning Club is born! Learning could be learners-led, expert-led or community-based.

The clubs that have been formed include an investment promotion in China LC which increases officers’ knowledge of the country, a semiconductor LC to help officers tap on each others’ competencies and industry contacts, a disruptive innovation LC, an LC on how to prepare for overseas investment promotion trips and even a memo processing club!

As you can see, the EDB LCs cover a wide range of interests, encouraging officers to acquire new, coded or uncoded tacit knowledge which can be applied to their work.

Because these LCs, which are built from the bottom-up, are based on common interests and experiential learning and sharing, the rate of learning is good and take-up is high.

Said Ms Julie Lee from the Chief Information Officer’s Office (CIOO): “We came together to learn how to post news and events on our new intranet. Then we compiled a learning guide to share information with more colleagues at the EDB Learning Festival. The new LC online platform will benefit more officers 24/7.”

EDB officers form 15 to 20 LCs a year. To date, more than 50% of EDB colleagues have participated in an LC either as a learner, teacher, facilitator or sponsor.

CIOO Manager Melissa Foo, who is part of the team that mooted the idea of the clubs, said that even more clubs will be formed in the future.

Added Mr Chia Yew Boon, Senior Officer (Business Knowledge Group) and an LC team member: “The next step is to build a platform for officers to capture their learning and share it with others.”
