| A WEALTH
of programmes to stay healthy |

A trip to the supermarket has forever changed the
way Human Resource Executive Wendy Law shops for
groceries.
Nowadays, when she wants to buy fruit juice, she
looks out for those that are made of real fruit
juice and are fortified with calcium, instead of
going for concentrates which have high sugar content.
And when she selects products with the Healthier
Choice symbol, she will read the labels to make
sure the sugar, fat and salt content is indeed lower.
What caused her to be so selective with her purchases?
Ms Law was one of the 12 National Library Board
(NLB) staff who signed up for a one-hour label reading
programme conducted at Jurong Point NTUC Fairprice
recently. “I was intrigued by the idea
of experiential learning right in the heart of the
supermarket. The idea was really appealing and exciting
and very different from the usual lecture-style
label reading talks conducted outside,” said Ms
Law, who paid $10 for the session.
She found the educational experience most useful
as “the knowledge I gained helps me to pick up subtle
information in labels and make more informed choices”.
The label reading programme was one of the many
events organised by the Workplace hEALTH (WEALTH)
Committee which are open to NLB staff from across
the network of public libraries.
Ms Law, who is a keen supporter of WEALTH programmes,
has
also participated in a bowling event, a trail at
Fort Canning, a basic archery course, annual health
screening exercises and ACTIVE Day programmes.
The joy of learning new things and “the opportunity
to mingle with all levels of staff and make new
friends” is what keeps her going back
for more.
When asked what other programmes she would like
to see introduced, she enthused: “I am looking forward
to more outdoor programmes like cable skiing, tree-climbing
and paintball!” |
