Galvanising the spirit of PRIDE

A rousing performance by the Military Police.

Productivity and Innovation in Daily Effort” (PRIDE) is a rallying call to remind personnel throughout the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) that the practice of productivity is a
daily affair.

The PRIDE movement is about galvanising our people and embracing an attitude of change. It is about motivating them and unleashing their creative potential. The spirit and culture of PRIDE in MINDEF have been built up successfully over 20 years.

The spirit of PRIDE is not about the number of WIT ideas or suggestions submitted each year. It is not about the number of teams we send for conventions or competitions. Rather, the spirit of PRIDE in MINDEF is about making MINDEF a learning and knowledge management organisation where we hope to instil the habit of lifelong learning in
our Servicemen.

In order to enhance public awareness of MINDEF’s PRIDE movement and to promulgate the spirit and benefits of innovation and productivity,
it was decided that the success stories be shared with members of
the public.

The annual MINDEF PRIDE Day recognises PRIDE achievements and activists. It also showcases MINDEF’s commitment and continuous effort in optimising our scarce resources and stretching the defence dollar.

The 17th MINDEF PRIDE Day was successfully held from 28 to 30 May. It consisted of an award presentation ceremony held at the Rock Auditorium, as well as an exhibition at the Suntec City Mall Atrium.

The theme of this year’s MINDEF PRIDE Day was “Optimising Resources and Innovating for Our Future”. This theme reflects MINDEF’s and the SAF’s endeavours to do more with less while finding innovative ways to achieve the organisation’s desired future. In fact, in 2003, suggestions and projects related to the MINDEF PRIDE movement resulted in about $251 million in total savings and cost avoidance.

On the honour roll
During the award presentation ceremony, 169 WITs and units from MINDEF and the SAF were recognised for their efforts and contributions towards productivity, innovation and organisational excellence.

Minister for Defence, RADM (NS) Teo Chee Hean, presented the prestigious Minister for Defence Award to Air Logistics Squadron of Paya Lebar Air Base, as well as the MINDEF Excellence Award to the General Support Maintenance Battalion and the Ordnance Engineering Training Institute. Minister of State for Defence, Mr Cedric Foo, presented 166 other awards to outstanding teams and individuals.

Attractive showcase
The exhibition was officially opened by RADM (NS) Teo Chee Hean. It showcased 35 of the most outstanding projects from MINDEF, SAF, Defence Science and Technology Agency and Singapore Technologies Engineering.

The exhibitors went all out this year to attract the public to view the projects, many of which were interactive. The exhibition proved to be a success, seeing a steady stream of visitors throughout the three days.

Besides the project exhibits, the various arms of the MINDEF Productivity and Innovation Committee also put up posters to educate the public on how the various steering committees have been working towards excellence in MINDEF and the SAF.

Encouraging turnout
During the event, performances were put up by the Military Police and the SAF Music and Drama Company, local celebrities and artistes, school concert bands, choirs ensembles and chamber ensembles. SAFRA radio deejays and local artistes also hosted games which saw the public winning attractive prizes. All these proved to be immense crowd pleasers as a total of 24,000 people, of which 19,000 were members of public, visited the exhibition.
