Spend a day at Pulau In-no

to reflect visionary leadership at SSC.

Imagine this: Gentle waves lapping against the shore, a breeze tenderly brushing against your cheeks, coconut leaves rustling and graceful seagulls gliding overhead.

Welcome to Pulau In-no — the very own inspirational island of the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) — where you can let your imagination run wild and allow your creative juices to ride with the tide.

Thinking out of the box

SSC hopes that by providing an unconventional and unstructured environment — away from standard workstations and meeting rooms — staff will be inspired to come up with innovative ways to improve and enhance their work.

The committee decided on the seaside theme for the room because the beach and the sky reflect unending possibilities. Tranquil scenery will also help staff to relax so that ideas can flow freely.

Staff sacrificed many lunch hours to paint the room.

Enthusiastic staff
The staff willingly sacrificed their lunch hours to paint the room and source for furnishings. In all, it took one and a half months to plan, prepare and complete the painting and furnishing of the room.

What kept the staff going was the challenge of creating a realistic beach scene. No one else in SSC had ever tried to produce artwork on a plaster wall, and the staff wanted to be the first to break convention.

Management support
Furthermore, management staff gave their unstinting support and a lot of leeway for the committee to explore ideas. They also gamely participated in a “dotting ceremony” on the opening day.

A great team at work
The process of creating the innovation corner uncovered some of the staff members’ hidden talents and also stimulated many new ideas.

Said IT Consultant Michael Law: “One good lesson I learned from this project is that when we are united, we can do it! I realise that SSC staff have a strong urge to do more than what they are doing now.

“Many are creative, helpful and fun to be with. It was mutual support that made the difference in this project. The hours we spent helping each other to prepare the room show that our core values such as teamwork, passion and the “can-do” spirit are alive and kicking in SSC!”
