Muhammad Tamami Rahim used to live in a world with
no communication. A hearing-impaired, he was unable
to express his feelings and enjoy a healthy family
and social life.
Today, his world is a kaleidoscopic one. Having
picked up communication techniques, he has not only
acquired new social skills and made new friends,
he has even found a new passion: drama.
Tamami’s metamorphosis is the result of the
special education and training he gets at the Singapore
School for the Deaf. And that is made possible by
donations that came through the Community Chest.
The PS21 Staff Well Being Functional Committee (SWBFC)
and the Community Chest have come together in a
concerted effort to raise much needed funds for
the latter, by reinvigorating interest in and support
for the SHARE programme.
SHARE is a monthly payroll deduction donation programme
to help the disadvantaged, including children with
special needs, frail and homebound elderly, families
in distress and adults with disabilities and terminal
illnesses.
A four-month campaign entitled “Just ONE”
is being introduced to all ministries and statutory
boards. The campaign appeals to all public officers
to consider increasing their existing SHARE donations
by $1. If all public officers who are currently
donating heed this call, the Community Chest will
have at least $1 million more a year for helping
350,000 beneficiaries.
The PS21 SWBFC has endorsed the Public Service’s
support for this simple yet powerful programme.
Mr Heng Swee Keat, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry
of Trade and Industry and Chairman of the PS21 SWBFC,
commented: “We encourage all public officers
to support the Community Chest’s Just ONE
campaign as a concerted Public Service effort towards
improving the lives of the disadvantaged.”
This year, over 350,000 The power of ONE beneficiaries
depend on the Community Chest to raise $43 million.
Just ONE is designed to allow many individuals to
be part of this effort to contribute to the $43
million to improve the lives of the needy. It is
simple, affordable and convenient for donors to
sign up. Yet, the results are impactful and powerful.
With support from the Public Service, the Community
Chest will be
able to:
| |
feed, bathe
and care for 400 elderly persons in their
homes |
| |
fund special education
for 250 children with disabilities |
| |
take care and teach daily
living skills to 280 adults with severe disabilities |
Said Ms Jennie Chua, Chairman of the Community Chest:
“On behalf of Community Chest and the 350,000
beneficiaries, we would like to express our heartfelt
appreciation to the Public Service for its efforts
to make Just ONE a success! That’s the power
of one! Just as many drops form an ocean, many $1-donations
from caring public officers will make a big difference
to the lives of many!” |
