Building capacity in public consultation

“DPM Lee… argued that the Government needs to consult others because it is not infallible. Public consultation not only enables the Government to refine and improve its policies, it also gives Singaporeans a greater sense of ownership towards Singapore and strengthens the bond between the Government and the public,” said Mr Eddie Teo, Permanent Secretary (PS) of Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), in his opening address at the Public Consultation Forum on 28 May 2004.

Public consultation is a key component of the PS21 strategic thrust “Openness, Responsiveness and Involvement”. To encourage public officers to be more consultative, a slew of measures have been taken to build up the capacity of public officers to conduct effective public consultation exercises.

In this issue of Challenge, we feature the newly launched Public Consultation Resource Portal, the Public Consultation Workshop and the Public Consultation Forum.
