CAAS
was recently awarded Singapore’s highest
accolade for business excellence.
The
year 2003 will be an unforgettable one for
the Civil
Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS).
This is because CAAS was recently awarded the nation’s
highest accolade for business excellence — the
Singapore Quality Award (SQA) 2003. With the SQA,
CAAS now joins the premier league of 16 public
and private sector companies with organisational
best practices that others use as benchmarks.
CAAS adopted the SQA Framework
because it strongly believes in the SQA’s
total approach to organisational excellence,
which encourages companies to go beyond being
the best.
An SQA Steering Committee was established with support from an SQA Secretariat.
The committee was chaired by Director-General of Civil Aviation Wong Woon Liong.
Division heads were appointed to drive various new initiatives under each SQA
category.
Although this was the first time that CAAS applied for the SQA, it achieved
its goal and was declared one of the three SQA winners at the ninth Singapore
Quality Award presentation ceremony held at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore
on 22 July 2003.

Mr Wong received the prestigious
award on behalf of CAAS from Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam,
then Senior Minister of State for Trade & Industry and Education.
Said Mr Wong in his acceptance speech: “CAAS is indeed honoured to
receive this prestigious national award that recognises the dedication and
commitment
of our management and staff in building a world-class organisation.
“While this award marks a significant milestone in our journey towards
business excellence, it is not the end of our quest for continuous improvements.
The
SQA will spur us to reach for greater heights.”
