It’s possible to do more with less

The I-Planners who launched the I-Portal (from left): Grace, Alvin and Stella.

Introducing and implementing innovations in an organisation does not always have to entail additional costs for the organisation. Sometimes, all it takes is an idea, a practical solution and a WIT committed to realising the solution. A group of officers from the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) managed to do just that.

In line with an organisation-wide initiative to encourage staff to “Do More With Less”, CAAS officers from the Corporate Planning/Aviation Development Division and the Information Systems Unit decided to form a joint WIT to work on a project.

Called the “I-Planners”, the WIT was led by Deputy Chief Innovation Officer Alvin Tan and comprised two other members, Corporate Service Officer Grace Ng and System Analyst Stella Poh.

The I-Planners decided on a challenge — to create the first-ever CAAS Innovation Portal (I-Portal) at no cost to the organisation. They conducted study visits to various organisations to learn about their innovation portals. Based on the findings from these study visits, the I-Planners collated a wish list of desirable features they wanted to see on the CAAS I-Portal. The I-Portal was then created using Microsoft Frontpage software. It was completed within a week of user-testing and fine-tuning and launched on 6 May 2003.

The I-Portal can be accessed through the CAAS intranet. It is user-friendly and accessible to all CAAS staff. The information on the portal is structured according to the five thrusts of the CAAS I-Star Framework (see this story). Staff can read write-ups and circulars on innovation-related events, study visits and projects, as well as speeches and other articles. There are also useful links to other innovation sites.

The I-Portal has met with favourable response from CAAS staff. The I-Planners have achieved their goal to create the I-Portal at no cost to the organisation.
