The
Enterprise Challenge (TEC) Unit signed a Memorandum
of Understanding with the National Neuroscience
Institute (NNI) on 14 August 2003. The event marked
the beginning of the TEC sponsored trial for
a project entitled “Data Integration
and Analysis of Intensive Care Unit”.
The MOU was signed by Ms Lim Huay Chih, Head of PS21 Office, and Dr Chumpon Chan,
Acting Director of NNI. The innovation was proposed by ReasonEdge Technologies
Pte Ltd.
The trial will test an innovative software that can potentially reduce the time
spent on collecting and integrating data manually in Intensive Care Units (ICUs).
The trial’s objective is to develop an affordable and user-friendly software
system that can extract and integrate data from different monitoring devices.
This will enhance the analysis process in the Neurosurgical ICU of the NNI.
Acute brain injury is a major cause of disability and the third leading cause
of death. Doctors treating such cases have to monitor and detect adverse and
even ultra sensitive changes in patients’ condition while they are in the
ICU.
The current general monitoring systems can only warn doctors of general problems
like low blood pressure, low heart rate, etc. They cannot detect specific brain
functions such as blood flow and brain temperature. However, such detection is
critical to patients with brain injuries.
The TEC sponsored innovation would attempt to collect and analyse critical information
from different monitoring systems. If proven successful, it will have the potential
to reduce medical errors, improve workflow and achieve better outcomes. This
will greatly aid doctors in decision making and providing enhanced patient care
and treatment. |
