The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA)
was delighted to receive two prestigious awards
during the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC)
May Day Award Ceremony.
This annual event is held to honour and award
individuals and organisations that contribute
significantly to good labour-management relations.
Veteran of Labour Award winner
Mr Mohd Ismail Bin Ameer Batcha is an Immigration
and Checkpoints Executive who is currently attached
to Changi Airport.
He has been involved in the trade union movement
for the past 30 years. He was instrumental in
forming the Immigration Officers Branch of the
Amalgamated Union of Public Employees (AUPE)
in 1969 and the Senior Immigration Officers Branch
in 1991.
Within AUPE itself, Mr Mohd Ismail was elected
Deputy General Secretary in 1980 and held this
position up to 2001.
For his tremendous contributions to the union
movement and the cultivation of strong labour-management
relations, NTUC presented Mr Mohd Ismail with
the Veteran of Labour Award.
Plaque of Commendation Award winner
For its significant contributions to the promotion
of staff training and skills upgrading, as well
as effective and good labour-management relations,
the (then) Singapore Immigration and Registration
(SIR) received the Plaque of Commendation Award.
SIR and the former Customs and Excise Department,
which have now formed ICA, had previously
attained the People Developer Standard and the
Singapore Quality Class. SIR’s Changi Airport
operation had also been awarded the internationally
recognised ISO 9002 certification.
Great emphasis is placed on training staff to
meet the challenges of increasing demands. ICA
provides numerous training courses for all levels
of staff and updates them on the latest occupational
trends.

ICA’s
management consistently promotes better relations
with the union. The People Relations
Committee, which comprises management and union
branch officials, was formed to share experiences
and harness differing viewpoints to enhance efficiency
and improve staff well-being. The committee has
taken on operational and staff challenges and
brought about improvements to the organisation.
A big ‘thank you’ to
all officers
To thank all officers for their hard work and
help in attaining the Plaque of Commendation
Award, ICA gave everyone a $20 NTUC voucher as
a May Day gift. It was hoped that the gesture
would spur the officers to build upon this achievement
and to continue with the quest for organisational
excellence and great labour-management relations. |
