The
Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) has taken steps
to
ensure safe online transactions and to boost consumers’ and
retailers’ confidence
in e-commerce.
IDA formed the industry-led National Trust Council (NTC) in March 2001 and
conceptualised the TrustSg Programme, a nation-wide trustmark initiative.
Trusted professional body
NTC is charged to look into trustmarks, risk and fraud management, as well
as best practices in e-commerce. Its objectives include helping businesses
and consumers to increase trust and confidence in e-commerce, and developing
and promoting thought leadership and best e-business practices for a trusted
e-commerce environment.
NTC recognised that creating a safe transaction environment is the first step
to boosting confidence in e-commerce. A secure and robust e-commerce infrastructure
is fundamental to nurturing such an environment, and so are sound e-commerce
practices — which is where the TrustSG Programme comes into the picture.
Nation-wide trustmark initiative
NTC implemented the TrustSg Programme to recognise online merchants which engage
in sound e-commerce practices, including data protection, offering a secure
e-payment infrastructure, providing adequate information, and ensuring proper
fulfilment of goods and services purchased.
TrustSg is the only national trustmark programme in Singapore that accredits
both business-to-consumer and business-to-business online merchants.
How the programme works
Businesses, trade associations and chambers of commerce are encouraged to get
accredited under the TrustSg Programme. If they meet the standards set by NTC,
they will be appointed as Authorised Code Owners (ACO).
ACOs award the TrustSg seal to worthy online merchants within their industry.
These online merchants have to comply with the code of practice set by their
respective ACO to get accredited.
Three ACOs have been appointed to date. There are now about 50 TrustSg-accredited
online retailers in Singapore. |
