The
Ministry of Community Development and Sports (MCDS)
is actively promoting family life. Besides
organising National Family Week, the ministry also
recently launched four new initiatives.
National Family Week
This year’s National Family Week was held
from 7 June to 15 July. It brought families closer
together through participation in over 60 events
and workshops. The theme “We’re Family… and
Friends” was chosen because it celebrates
kinship and youthful energy.
Exciting happenings
MCDS also introduced four new initiatives recently.
The first is the Kin-ergy website where teens can
participate in an online forum and gain tips on
various topics related to family, school and community
life and more. They can also seek advice from counsellors
from family service centres.
The second initiative is the Short Message Service
(SMS) facility available on the Kin-ergy website.
With this facility, teens can register their parents’ mobile
phone numbers and vice versa to receive surprise
voice messages from famous radio personalities
Glenn and Rod. Teens can also opt to receive SMS
alerts about fun-filled events and activities for
the family. The ministry is the first organisation
in Singapore to offer such a service through a
website.
MCDS also produced and distributed a 100-page magazine
to schools. Insightful and entertaining, Kin-ergy
covers topics such as pop culture, family relationships,
friendship, stress management, falling in love
and dressing up.
To top it off, MCDS was the first ministry to commission
an “Amazing Race” local reality gameshow.
In this programme entitled “Kin-ergy”,
teams consisting of a parent and his/her teenage
child pit their problem-solving skills against
each other in an island-wide race to win $15,000
worth of cash and prizes. Watch out for this five-part,
weekly series! |

Parenting
tips
Mr Chan Soo Sen, MCDS Minister of State
and also Chairman of Family Matters!
Singapore, said, Teenage years are
turbulent, exciting and confusing.
Parents need to prepare for this adjustment
way before their children reach their
teenage years. It is important for
adults to understand that their children
are in the midst of forming their own
identities. Nagging and dictating them
no longer work. Guide them but remember
to allow them personal space to grow
and mature into responsible young adults.
The winning formula to building a closer
relationship with your teenagers is
trust
and support.” |
