| The
wireless way to property management |

Every time the owner
of an industrial unit made a maintenance request,
it used to take Housing and Development Board Technical
Officer Hanizam Aris B. Haron at least two working
days to complete the paperwork. These days, however,
things are moving much smoother and faster, thanks
to a new wireless system.

The
Wireless Industrial Properties Management System
(WIPMAS) makes use
of GPRS-enabled personal digital assistants (PDAs)
to significantly
reduce the number of steps needed for handling
customers’ requests,
thus improving the efficiency of the Industrial Properties Department (IPD).
With the PDA, which can also be used as a mobile phone, technical officers
can now attend to the daily conservancy and maintenance needs of estates under
their charge within the same working day.
“The wireless PDA is so handy that I can do work, such as give instructions
to my contractors from anywhere and everywhere - from the office, at
a site or even when I’m off duty at home! Tenants can also call us directly
on the PDA for faster response to any matters of concern,” said Mr Hanizam.
Developed in-house by the Information Services Department and launched as a
pilot system in November 2002, WIPMAS integrates the wireless PDA with the
in-house Lotus Notes system.
Technical officers can immediately issue instructions to contractors, such
as to carry out rectification work. Approvals can be given via electronic means,
such as the Short Message Service (SMS) and emails, thus significantly speeding
up work processes.
With WIPMAS, contractors’ target completion dates and reminders are generated
and tracked automatically. In addition, the PDA helps the officers to keep
track of contractors’ contact data, monitor
utilities consumption, as well as to create incident reports. |
