Ideas abound at Crescent Girls’ School

This is how the Classroom of the Future looks like.

Rousing music produced with drums, agogo bells, congas, dustbins and coke cans welcomed the public officers to Crescent Girls’ School on 28 February. The students performed an original piece of Samba with such gusto and style that it had the audience on their feet, swaying to the catchy rhythm and joining in the music making.

While on an innovation trail around the school, the delegates soaked in the environment and marvelled at the sheer diversity of innovative projects seen. Some of the innovative projects included the following:

A collaboration with the Singapore School for the Deaf to produce an original children’s sign language storybook to enhance learning for hearing-impaired children
A joint project with the National Cancer Centre to develop the Kids Against Cancer website to promote cancer awareness and prevention amongst teenagers
A joint bioinformatics project with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Apple to develop a programme with the potential to facilitate the sharing of databases as well as reduce the time needed by life scientists to conduct data searches
The Creative Arts Web portal, which has a unique e-ticketing feature for online booking as well as a function that enables the school to track performance attendance patterns

A student demonstrating how to compose a score using IT.

The Classroom of the Future left the most lasting impression on the delegates. This special room encapsulates the school’s vision of how teaching and learning will take place in the future.

The futuristic learning ground is painted vibrant purple, green and yellow. The colourful, mobile furniture is ideal for varied student-centred activities. High-tech facilities capture the lessons conducted by the teachers and these lessons are placed in a repository for easy access by staff and students. New teachers can also record and view their own lessons for self-improvement and professional development. That afternoon, the visitors had a chance to use the facilities and enjoyed viewing themselves in action!
