Thank you, Agony Aunt

Students can ask questions in a relaxed environment.

St Margaret’s Secondary School encourages the parents of students to think of ways to improve all aspects of school life. Last year, one parent, Mdm Lee Lai Chee, gave a suggestion that makes it possible for teenagers with problems and questions to seek advice from the right sources.

Mdm Lee suggested setting up a post box where students who are shy or prefer to remain anonymous can write down their questions and conveniently drop them off.

The idea was so successful that the school now holds Agony Aunt sessions once a term. At these sessions, a panel comprising a parent, a qualified counsellor and a respected student leader presents different points of view and suggests solutions to the questions submitted.

The school was very receptive to Mdm Lee’s idea because it provided an avenue for students to ask questions and discuss issues commonly faced by young people in a relaxed and non-threatening environment.

By learning from one another and significant adults, the students are empowered to solve their problems. Parents also gain from a strong sense of involvement in the well-being of their daughters.
