Simple idea to enhance online library service

A simple suggestion to improve an everyday process can impact a large number of customers. This point was well illustrated by Mr Lim Cheng Tiong’s suggestion to the National Library Board (NLB).

Before his suggestion was implemented, the status of reference items in the library’s online catalogue was “Not on Loan”, which was the same as that of items that could be borrowed. Consequently, some customers assumed that the reference items were available for loan and proceeded to the library. They were disappointed when they could not borrow out the items.

Mr Lim suggested using a more suitable term to describe reference items in order to differentiate them from items that can be borrowed out of the library.

NLB took note of his suggestion and implemented it. The status of reference items online is now “For Reference Only”.
