Keeping the passion alive

Ten couples learnt the secrets to a lasting relationship and strengthened theirs at the Truly, Madly, Deeply Marriage Seminar held in August 2002. It was organised by the Singapore Armed Forces Personnel Services Centre, the social activity and welfare arm of the Ministry of Defence, for newly-weds, long-time couples as well as those who were planning to get married.

Capt Goh and his wife, Annie, exchanged their marriage vows.

Mrs Joyce Ewing-Chow, an experienced family life trainer, shared the secrets to a strong union, such as ways to keep the flame burning and tips on handling conflicts. During the seminar, those yet to be married exchanged love letters and the married ones renewed their marriage vows.

Feedback was very favourable. Said Capt Goh, “The seminar was an opportunity to spend time with my spouse. We have both benefited from this as we are now more aware of the importance of listening to and understanding each other. The renewal of our marriage vows was very meaningful to us as it reminded us of the need to love and protect each other no matter the situation.”

Ms Janice Lim also enjoyed and benefited from the seminar. “The most meaningful part of the seminar was the love letter writing session. If this wasn’t in the programme, I wouldn’t have known that love letters are important and can strengthen and add sparks to a relationship,” she said.

Ms Angeline Pang added, “Marriage needs to be kept alive through many little things and in little ways. It’s important to keep the passion and intimacy alive.”
