A two-week
charity fiesta saw all officers in the Ministry
of Education Headquarters (MOE HQ) participating
in an array of community involvement activities.
To mark
the second year of participation in the MOE Community
Involvement Programme (MCIP), two major fundraising
projects were organised at the MOE HQ level in end
2002.
The first project, the Permanent Secretary Charity Golf Competition raised
$12,000 from sponsors, well-wishers and MOE officers.
The second project was the MCIP Charity Concert. The theme of the concert, “Many
Races, One Heart”, depicted people of different races bonding in mind
and spirit to raise funds for the less fortunate in the community. The concert
was a showcase of MOE HQ’s in-house talents from the different divisions,
who came together to sing, dance and creatively blend different art forms.
The two events raised a total of $17,500 for the Ulu Pandan Family Service
Centre. The funds will be used to develop programmes and services for less
fortunate families living in Ghim Moh.
Divisions do their bit for charity
Staff from various divisions in MOE HQ also participated in an array of community
involve-ment activities in September 2002.
Those from the Public Affairs, Higher Education, Planning and Organisational
Development Divisions pulled their resources together. They organised a two-day
lunchtime sale and cultural appreciation programme, which included a flea market,
the sale of food, the promotion of traditional games and arts, as well as a
demonstration of how to prepare traditional food. All proceeds went to the
Spastic Children’s Association of Singapore.
Officers from the Corporate Services Division played host to 40 elderly persons
from Lion Befrienders by accompanying them to attend the charity concert rehearsal
and treating them to a lunch buffet. There was also a blood donation drive.
Concerted effort to increase volunteerism
MOE HQ adopts a two-pronged approach to community involvement: |

Varied
activities are conducted throughout the year
by different MOE HQ divisions. They range from
reforestation projects at Bukit Timah Nature
Reserve to weekly visits to homes and other voluntary
organisations.
Each
MOE HQ division has its own plan for community
involvement activities in
a calendar year. The selection of activities is based on the level of interest,
areas of ability and expertise of the officers in the division. All these efforts
are part of MOE’s corporate policy to encourage officers to participate
actively in community service and to promote volunteerism.
MOE HQ believes that the officers’ efforts and contributions will make
a difference, no matter how small they may be, to the lives of fellow Singaporeans
who are not as fortunate as them. |
