| Venturing
beyond with SPF Commissioner |
| |
In his presentation,
Commissioner of Singapore Police Force (SPF) Khoo
Boon Hui discussed the need for organisations to
venture beyond the comfort zone so as to succeed
in innovation.
Explaining this concept using the deep dive metaphor,
he said that the wealth of colourful sea creatures
and exploration of unchartered territories underwater
can be likened to the benefits that organisations
experience when they innovate.
The Commissioner also urged leaders “to encourage
people to take risks”. He illustrated his
point with an entertaining anecdote about a highly
successful Australian winemaker who gave his teenage
daughter several rows of his vines to harvest when
she expressed interest in making wine. He explained
that it was a risk, but it soon became apparent
to the winemaker that with encouragement and support,
his daughter could become an even better winemaker
than he was.
Emphasising the importance of effective leadership,
he said, “Innovation can take root anywhere,
whether in a commercial enterprise or public organisation,
but it cannot take place without enthusiasm
and a lot of encouragement from the leaders of
the
organisation.” He said that leaders should
not be intimidated by new ideas, even if they come
from a younger and less experienced person.
The Commissioner also recounted SPF’s innovation
journey, and how
the Force worked to encourage
a common vision through open communication and
to align all officers to work efficiently towards
a common set of goals. |
