perspectives from John Kao |

Innovation requires
a lot more than generating a large number of ideas,
organising campaigns, promoting lateral thinking
and adopting tools like the Balanced Scorecard,
said innovation guru John Kao.
The highly acclaimed consultant, author, venture-capitalist and much more was
speaking to a group of public officers who attended his talk on 28 February.
Pointing out that many organisations have a “somewhat limited, tactical
concept of innovation”, Mr Kao said, “For innovation to be the engine
for the transformation of your organisation, you actually have to have a broader
and deeper set of concepts of what it is.”
Clarifying the role of innovation, he said that it must be aligned with the “desired
future state” or vision of the organisation. Reaching that desired future
state requires organisational transformation, and that is where innovation comes
into the picture.
“Innovation is the engine that drives transformation… and creativity
provides the fuel for innovation. Creativity is the ability to generate new ideas.
Innovation
is the ability to realise value from ideas. Innovation is meaningless unless
it is tied to the desired future state.”
Mr Kao also said that for innovation to take place, organisations need to look
into several areas. For example, the working environment must promote creativity,
innovation and entrepreneurial behaviour. There must be systems to support innovation.
Policies, processes and tools must be integrated to encourage innovation.
And for innovation to be sustainable, he said that it must occur at the systemic
level. This means that innovation must affect everything the organisation does. |
