| Inspiring
encounter with Jim Aitchison |

Sheer
guts, pure passion and absolute discipline are
the keys to
the success of his writing career, claims Mr Jim
Aitchison.
The former Executive Creative Director of the
Batey Ads Group gave up a very successful career
in advertising after 20 years to pursue his passion
for writing
books. He shared his experiences candidly with
a group of public officers on 25 February.
Here are excerpts of what he had to say.
On getting work done: “Inspiration is very
fickle. If you wait for inspiration, you’ll
never do anything.… Discipline is my biggest
thing. I cling to discipline. If I’m not
disciplined, I’m never going to finish a
book.”
On success: “A friend of mine once said: ‘If
you want to be the world’s best, nobody will
stop you.’ Ninety-five percent of the people
in the world are just quite happy to go along and
get their work done…. But it’s the
other 5% who are really driven or ambitious who
are the ones who will get to the top.… You
can hold yourself back just by being content.”
On pursuing dreams: “I think the saddest
thing is to finish your working life and never
tried to do things that you dreamed about doing.
Every one of us has dreams.… Somehow in your
life, you’ve got to work at it so that you
can be what you want to be.” |
