A hothouse of quality ideas

Mr Tan (third left) was impressed by the number and quality of the ideas generated during the mass brainstorming session.

Some 1,200 staff generated numerous quality ideas, 190 ideas were evaluated, the 10 best ideas were selected and those who proposed the winning ideas were rewarded - all within two hours. How was that impossible? Read on to find out how the officers of the Singapore Police Force (SPF) did it.

With the inspiring theme, “Our Service Excellence Journey - Challenges in a New Environment”, the recent SPF Service Excellence Day brought to light the importance of having an innovative service mindset to sustain service improvements in the SPF.

One of the key events of the day was the “Thinkathon” where some 1,200 SPF officers from all units and of all ranks gathered at the Nanyang Polytechnic Auditorium for a mass on-site brainstorming session. Given just 60 minutes, they were challenged to generate as many ideas as they could to enhance service levels at the SPF.

Some 1,200 officers generated ideas on improving service in the SPF.

A consultant from Service Quality Centre who specialises in creativity, innovative thinking and innovation solutions facilitated the Thinkathon. The consultant taught the participants to apply a special technique to generate many ideas. The ideas, which were recorded on worksheets, were submitted at the end of the 60-minute session. Evaluations were then conducted at the individual and group levels by a team of evaluators using a set of criteria. At the end of the session, the guest of honour, Permanent Secretary (Home Affairs) Tan Guong Ching, presented awards to those who had proposed the top 10 ideas.

It was extremely rewarding to see numerous ideas being generated during the session. One of the winning ideas was to place SPF officers in customer-centric public and private organisations to learn from their best practices.

Said Assistant Commissioner Rajoo V. Gopal, Director Service Development & Inspectorate Department of SPF, “The Thinkathon served to reinforce the fact that there are many creative ideas out there, floating in the minds of SPF officers. But we shouldn’t wait for another event such as the Thinkathon to generate ideas. We should continually seek to generate ideas that can transform our work environment and enhance our professionalism.”
