| Going
the extra mile to help the disabled |

For
the last few years, Senior Lifeguard Dennis Scheidegger
has been helping
a wheelchair-bound woman with her weekly therapy
swims. Ms Lee Seow Li, a piano teacher, was left
handicapped by a rare spinal condition in her early
20s. Mr Scheidegger’s dedication and sensitivity
has made a difference in her life.
He
noticed that Ms Lee started coming to the Ang Mo
Kio Swimming Complex with her brother
about
three years ago. “Her
brother would drive her here and help her get in and out of the pool. My colleagues
and I began to assist her and after some time, they realised that she was in
good hands. Her brother no longer has to bring her here. Nowadays she takes
a taxi by herself and we help her when she arrives. I also help her to hail
a cab when she is ready to leave.” Ms Lee is still a regular visitor
to the pool and swims there three times a week.
Mr Scheidegger feels that he was just doing what came naturally. Noticing that
she had difficulty manoeuvring her wheelchair, he and his team even suggested
erecting a ramp at the entrance of the swimming complex to make it more user-friendly
for the disabled.
Before joining the Singapore Sports Council 20 years ago, Mr Scheidegger worked
in hotels and private pools. He has been interested in this field since he
was 16. Friends encouraged the keen swimmer to take a life-saving course held
by the Singapore Lifeguard Corps, a non-profit organisation. After completing
his National Service, he decided to become a lifeguard.
He feels honoured to receive the STAR Service Award and would like to thank
his supervisor and all his colleagues for their support. |
