For
the two weeks leading up to the relaunch of WITs
at the National Arts Council (NAC), staff regularly
received emails inviting them to a big event on
7 August 2002. While some thought it was a prelude
to a National Day feasting session, others cleverly
guessed that something exciting about WITs was cracking.
It proved to be both.
The day started well enough at a bleary 9 am. As
sleepy participants strolled into the meeting room,
they were surprised to see the whole place decked
with colourful streamers and balloons. As soon as
all were seated, the CEO of NAC gave a rousing and
encouraging introduction that immediately waked
everyone up. What followed was a stimulating talk
by Ms Janice Lua from the National Library Board
(NLB) who shared success stories of WITs. By now,
all were fully awake after hearing the interesting
case studies.
Next came some major shockers, albeit pleasant ones.
A major announcement unveiled a brand new WITs format
which required teams to submit only a simple, two-page
report consisting of three sections. For those who
were previously dumbfounded by the prospect of having
to complete a 15-page report, the news brought sweet
relief.
Loud, lusty cheers were further heard as other revisions
and incentives were announced: |
| |
more
flexibility in using analytical tools (for
example, fish bones are no longer compulsory) |
| |
cross-divisional
teams to be formed on a voluntary basis |
| |
an
enlarged pool of facilitators to include both
Directors and Deputy Directors |
| |
improved
monetary reward structure with a bonus for
efficient teams |
|
| |
By
the time the cheers died down, it was time for the
buffet reception. And after that was the highlight
of the day - a brainstorming session for WIT ideas.
It was a thoroughly hands-on session where participants
got to clown around. Many games were played to stimulate
the creative juices, and after the fun, slips of
post-its were distributed for the participants to
jot down their ideas. Then the NLB facilitators
guided them in a roundtable discussion of the ideas,
which were later developed using web-diagrams and
presented to all.
Many found the ideas bold, innovative and even bizarre.
Most participants were surprised that they were
capable of generating good ideas from a fun and
informal session.
The ideas were later presented to senior management
staff and all received approval for further study.
An invitation to undertake the WIT projects received
good response, which was an impressive demonstration
of staff volunteerism.
On the whole, the relaunch event was an effective
and enjoyable session that hopefully might have
sparked off some big ideas. |
