More
than 400 public officers left behind their occupational
worries and went with friendly smiles and a strong
spirit of camaraderie to the first-ever joint sports
carnival held on 18 October 2002 at the PUB Recreation
Club.
The officers were from the Ministry of the Environment
Headquarters (ENV), National Environment Agency
(NEA) and Public Utilities Board (PUB).
The inaugural ENV Sports Carnival aimed to instil
in the “ENV family” a sense of corporate
identity, enhance social interaction and rejuvenate
work-weary minds.
Fun for everyone
With telematch games and wide-ranging sports activities
such as badminton, tennis, snooker and carrom to
choose from, there was something for everyone at
the carnival.
In fact, Ms Irene Chew from ENV enjoyed her game
of carrom so much that she has brought out her own
carrom board at home and started playing with her
kids again. “The carrom game was very refreshing.
I had not been playing the game for more than 10
years and I started liking it all over again! Through
the game, I also got to know more people from NEA
and PUB!” she said with a smile.
The telematch, which consisted of five games, attracted
six teams - one from ENV, two from NEA and three
from PUB. In a feisty burst of energy, participants
charged forward during the first game, a three-legged
race, eager to strut their stuff. Then came other
games such as tug-of-war and one involving officers
dunking into a basin of water and picking out grapes
from it.
Feedback for the telematch was good. Said Mr Ang
Poh Pheng, leader of the ENV team, “The telematch
games were very exciting and enjoyable. Although
our team was a bit weak, the team spirit was definitely
high. I hope we would have more of such events in
future.”
Leaders caught in
action

The
senior management staff were not left out of the
action. Returning the ball with swift and powerful
strokes was ENV’s very own Deputy Secretary,
Ms Chan Lai Fung, who partnered colleague Jeremy
Ong in a friendly table tennis match against a team
from PUB.
“ DS was an impromptu player. She was not
prepared at all, but she was game enough to join
us and she played so well that we finally won the
match for the mixed doubles team!” said Mr
Ong.
There was also a telematch planned specially for
the senior management staff who had to pair up,
lock their arms together back-to-back, and run while
balancing a balloon between them. The crowd erupted
into cheers as they watched their heads of department,
directors and other senior management officers in
action.
“The most exciting part of the carnival for
me was definitely watching our bosses participating
in the games!” voiced Ms Hariati Samuri.
At the end of the carnival, PUB claimed the lion’s
share of the prizes and everyone tucked into a buffet
meal as music hits played in the background. Despite
the sweltering heat, everyone agreed that it was
a good way to spend the day engaging in sports and
games. |
