A date with nature

MOH staff and children from the APSN enjoying their visit to the Botanic Gardens.

Held at the Ecolake of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) second Community Involvement Day programme was attended by some 300 MOH staff and 240 children from the Association of Persons with Special Needs (APSN).

It was a gloomy and wet morning as the children and staff, clad in colourful T-shirts, arrived at the Botanic Gardens. Everyone cheered when the dark clouds finally went away and the sun came out with a smile.

Eagerly, the children gathered to listen to the welcome speech by the guest of honour, Dr Balaji Sadasivan, Minister of State (Health and Environment).

After a short mass dance exercise, 21 teams of children and staff set off excitedly on a treasure hunt which took them to 12 “checkpoints” at various parts of the Botanic Gardens. There, they were tasked to search for specific items like ice-cream wrappers, quizzed on the different colours of the bougainvillea flower, made to complete a sketch of the bamboo plant and to walk like ducks across a wooden bridge and much more. After the fun-filled treasure hunt, everyone was treated to healthy burgers, desserts and fruits at the open field facing the lake.

The grand finale - a cheer competition - was most enjoyable. Each group, which was named after a tree or flower, had to present an innovative 30-second cheer. Some groups even had their own props. One could see that both the children and staff really had fun.

Seeing the joyous smiles on the faces of the children made it all worthwhile for the MOH staff who had raised a total of $7,025 for the event through pledge cards. Previous fund-raising events for the APSN included the President’s Challenge, Charity Food Day and a walk-a-jog.

GETTING INVOLVED
The APSN has been MOH’s adopted charity since the formation of the Ministry’s Community Involvement Committee (CIC) in January 2001. The CIC was set up in support of the PS21 Staff Well Being Functional Committee’s call to encourage the active involvement of public officers in the community.
